Case Studies

Case Study 1: The TA Soldier Who Broke His Neck

Dr D was a TA Sergeant with a PhD who broke his neck in a training accident, which left him in hospital for a year and reliant on a wheelchair. Ormerods Solicitors negotiated him a settlement of £1.1m with the MoD, even though he did not suffer much loss of earnings and was actually able to move to a better paid career.

Case Study 2: The Asbestos Cancer Case

Retired Mr W approached us a few months before his death from mesothelioma, the respiratory cancer caused by asbestos fibres. Mr W was exposed to asbestos fibres whilst working as an electrician's mate in the 1960s. Ormerods Solicitors were able to track down his old employers and their insurers to secure an award of £57,000 to Mr W's Estate.

Case Study 3: Slipping In A Shopping Mall

Mrs B slipped on vomit in a shopping mall and broke her wrist. The shopping centre's owners denied liability, claiming they had a good system for spotting and cleaning spillages. However, we found evidence of longstanding problems with their cleaners, who had anything but a reliable cleaning inspection system in place, and Mrs B was awarded damages and costs.

Case Study 4: The Collapsing Chair

When Mr C's defective work chair broke, injuring his back, he suffered loss of earnings through unpaid sick leave. However, Mr C appointed Ormerods Solicitors, who successfully claimed £16,000 damages for him.

Case Study 5: The Stressed Teacher, Abandoned By His Union

A teacher nearing retirement, Mr G suffered a nervous breakdown. Evidence in his personnel file showed that he was struggling to cope with the growing demands on his time and changes in his teaching arrangements. Liability and the question of the causes of his stress were strongly disputed, together with the adequacy of his employers' response to his problems. Because of its complexity his union solicitors had dropped his case. Although a challenging claim, Ormerods Solicitors agreed to help and negotiated a settlement of £40,000.
